The general set of laws in Sri Lanka includes assortments of systematized and uncodified types of law, of numerous beginnings subordinate to the Constitution of Sri Lanka which is the highest law of the island. Its legitimate structure is a combination of general sets of laws of Roman-Dutch law, English law, Kandyan law, Thesavalamai law, and Muslim law.
Roman-Dutch law
Despite the fact that the Roman-Dutch law was presented by the Dutch, it was reached out by the British. Today Roman-Dutch law is known as the Common law of Residuary law of Sri Lanka.
Family law, The law of delict, The law of contract, Law of property, are some of the present applications in Roman-Dutch law.
English law
English law has influenced our legal system significantly. Commercial Law, Law relating to Civil and Criminal Procedure, Law of Evidence, Administrative Law are some of the present applications in English law.
Kandyan law
Kandyan law is the consuetudinary law that starts from the Kingdom of Kandy, which is pertinent to Sri Lankans who are Buddhist and from the previous regions of the Kandyan Kingdom. Kandyan law was applied for Marriage, Divorce, Inhabitants of property.
Thesavalamai law
For Thesawalamai to apply to a person it must be established that he is a Tamil inhabitant of the Northern Province. Thesavalamai is the customary law of the Sri Lankan Tamil occupants Jaffna promontory, arranged by the Dutch during their pioneer rule in 1707. The Law in its present form applies to most Tamils in northern Sri Lanka. The law is personal in nature thus it is applicable mostly for property, inheritance, and marriage.
Muslim law
Muslim law is another customary law of Sri Lanka. It is applicable to Sri Lankans who are Muslims by virtue of birth and conversion to Islam. It is different from Islamic law and governs aspects of marriage, divorce custody, maintenance, and also the administration of mosques.
